Couples seek a relationship counselor to discuss various concerns

You may vividly remember that special day you gazed in your partner’s eyes at the altar. “Till death do us part,” were the vows you both took. However, over time, you and your other half may have become emotionally worn down. Fortunately, there are relationship counselors at Counseling Associates who can help.

How do you know when it may be time to seek professional relationship counseling? Couples often seek a counselor when they experience conflict in the following areas:

Communication

Communication is defined as, “the act or process of using words, sounds, signs, or behaviors to express or exchange information or to express your ideas, thoughts, feelings, etc., to someone else.” There are several ways we communicate from saying, “I love you,” to hugs and kisses. A spouse may leave notes of affirmation or smile and wink before walking out the door. However, communication can deteriorate. Negative communication can include words, expressions, or behaviors that leave a spouse feeling depressed, insecure, or disregarded. The spouse may wish to withdraw from the conversation. The tone as well as the words and actions of a spouse can have a positive or negative effect on the relationship. When couples recognize a lack of or change in communication, they may consider professional counseling.

Intimacy

A loss of, or sudden increase in intimacy are reasons couples seek a professional. If a spouse had or is having an affair, a relationship counselor can help. Although it takes commitment, a willingness to forgive and move forward, it is not impossible for a couple to recover from infidelity. If both individuals are committed to being honest with each other, they may be able to save the marriage. In some cases, the couple may determine it is best to separate. We can help couples work through the tough times.

Finances

Disagreements over money are among the top reasons couples experience conflict. Regardless of who balances the checkbook, it is important for both spouses to be involved in the finances. When couples experience financial hardship or do not properly manage their money, issues can arise. A relationship counselor can help a couple discuss their financial situation and set goals toward achieving financial as well as marital harmony.
